Mersey Docks
& Harbour Board

The Mersey Docks  and Harbour Board, constituted,  by an Act of Parliament  in 1858, had the entire control  of  the Port Of Liverpool. The new  Board's dock  engineer was Jesse Hartley  who  planned  and built the docks  that  would  accommodate  what were the largest  ships in  the  world. He  added 10 miles  of quay  space and over 140 acres of wet docks to the Liverpool dock system.
