Egremont Ferry

The  Egremont Ferry   was   founded by  Captain  John Askew  around 1831. The first  first Egremont  ferryboats  would  have been small wooden paddle steamers which had  no  protection  for the passengers   from  the  weather. In 1834 complaints   were  made by the  public  about  the   irregular  sailings of  the  Egremont steamers, probable because they were towing other vessels and not keeping to  their schedule Egremont ferry  passengers were not happy  with  Captain Askew's management and in 1835 the Egremont Steam Ferry Company was formed. The new company aimed to improve the service and introduce iron steamers.

Not far from the ferry stood the  Egremont  Hotel  which  was popular   with  Liverpool merchants and their families who came to stay during the summer months. The Wallasey Local Board acquired the Egremont Ferry in 1860. A new iron pier was  designed and  constructed  by William  Carson  the  ferry  manager in 1874-6. A new pier was constructed with a floating landing stage in 1909. At Egremont the Wallasey  Ferries  had a  workshop  facilities and a gridiron on which ferryboats could be beached for minor repairs and painting.
