The New Brighton ferry came under the control of the Wallasey Local Board in 1860. The new owners set about removing the old wooden pier and replacing it with an iron pier which had a floating landing stage. During the construction around 1865, the pier was badly damaged by the Lamport and Holt vessel Galilo which ran into it. The iron pier was opened in 1867. During a storm on evening of the 17 March 1907 a gale dragged the floating landing stage from its moorings causing the two bridges to fall into the water. During the 1920's and 1930's improvements were carried out to the pier and landing stage. The last ferryboat sailed from New Brighton on the 26 September 1971 |
