The  Woodside Ferry was  leased  to the  Birkenhead Commissioner by the Woodside North Birkenhead and Liverpool Steam Ferry Company in 1842, and in 1859 the Commissioners  bought  the  service outright. Birkenhead developed from a small village on the banks of the Mersey in 1800 to an Industrial  township  by the 1850's with shipbuilding and engineering. The old stone slipway  was replaced by a floating landing stage in 1862. This was  partly sunk in 1887 after being rammed by a sailing ship
