For many years sailing ships had encountered the difficulties of the strong currents and  the prevailing winds as they  approached  or left  the  Port Of Liverpool.  By  the  early  1800's  steam  paddle  ferryboats  had begun operating  on  the  Mersey.  These  small  paddle  steamers  had  the  power needed to tow sailing ships in or out of the river. At Egremont in the 1830's passengers  complained that their ferryboat was not keeping to its schedule, but was instead towing vessels
