By the late 1950's the transatlantic passenger trade was rapidly declining. The days of the large transatlantic liners were drawing to a close. In the 1970's the Mersey Docks and  Harbour Board  decided scrap  the old  landing stage and  with financial  assistance, to build a new  but small stage to cater for the cross river ferry service and the Isle of Man, the new stage opened in 1974
