Sailing Vessels |
|
|
The 1880's was a period of experimentation with sail and various ideas were tried to improve the efficiency of the sailing-ships. The number of masts varied. Iron hulls were replaced by steel which enabled larger vessels to be constructed. The Jubilee rig was introduced in1897 the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Sailors called it the bald-headed. Jubilee ships had a very square rig and carried nothing above the top-gallants sails. |
