Sailing Vessels

 

The 1880's  was  a  period  of  experimentation  with  sail  and various ideas  were tried to improve the  efficiency of  the sailing-ships. The  number of masts varied. Iron hulls were  replaced  by steel which enabled  larger vessels to be constructed. The  Jubilee rig was  introduced in1897 the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Sailors called it the bald-headed. Jubilee  ships had a very square rig and carried nothing above the  top-gallants sails
