Hilbre Island

Hilbre Island was purchased by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board in 1856, having earlier erected a telegraph station and a self-registering tide gauge on the island.
Dock Board charts of the early 1900's show a system of navigations buoy's that the company maintained to mark the entrance to the Hoyle Lake off Hoylake. Further to the south  the Hilbre Swash, was then a safe anchorages for vessels which has now  disappeared due to silting, that's still continuing today along the Wirral coastline.
In 1945, the Hoylake and District Council bought the island for £2,500 from the Dock Board, for the use of the public. For many years the Councils Engineers and Surveyors office at 8 Riversdale Road, West Kirby, issued permits to the general public to visit the island.
