The Old Village of West Kirby was a small agriculture community. At the heart of it stood St Bridget's Church which dates back to 1150-60. Scattered across the parish were a number of small groups cottages and farms, and on Grange Hill a windmill use to stand where the sand-stone beacon has been erected.
The opening of the West Kirby Railway Station in Grange Road in 1878, promoted rapid expansion of the surrounding area. By the late 1890's a new township of West Kirby had become a resort with the opening of the Hydropathic Hotel and the Marine Lake. Shops in Banks Road and the Crescent served the needs of residents. During the summer months day-trippers and holiday makers came to West Kirby. Along Banks Road there were a number of cafes that catered for the visitors.
